Do this first: shut the water off

Burst pipe or major leak: find the main shutoff, at the meter box near the street or where the line enters the house, and turn it clockwise until it stops. Leaking water heater: close the valve on the cold line above the unit. Sewage backing up: stop running water anywhere in the house, because every gallon you use comes back up the lowest drain. Then call. A two-minute call with the plumber beats an hour of guessing.

What counts as an emergency

Burst or spraying pipes. Sewage in the house. No water service at all. A leaking water heater, because 50 gallons does not stay inside a corroded tank for long.
