The real numbers, up front
A new tank water heater in Bluffton costs $1,895 to $2,307 installed in 2026. That range comes from Prestige Plumbing's published flat-rate pricebook, not an estimate engine:
- 40-gallon electric: $1,895
- 50-gallon electric: $2,059
- 40-gallon gas: $2,145
- 50-gallon gas: $2,307
Each price includes the Bradford White unit, code-required parts, installation, testing, haul-away of the old tank, and cleanup. The number you approve before work starts is the number on the bill. Full details live on the water heater service page.
Why most quotes online are useless
Search this question and you get national averages: "between $900 and $3,500 depending on factors." That range tells you nothing because it averages a Phoenix slab house with a Boston basement. Local flat-rate pricing exists so you can plan with real numbers. If a Bluffton company will not give you a price before the truck arrives, the price depends on how the visit goes. That should worry you.
Repair or replace: the 8-year rule
Two questions decide it. How old is the unit, and is the tank itself leaking?
Under 8 years old with a dry tank: repair. A thermostat, heating element, or relief valve costs a fraction of replacement. Past 8 years, or any sign of water around the base: replace. A corroded tank cannot be fixed, and a 50-gallon tank that lets go puts 50 gallons on your floor, then keeps feeding the puddle from the supply line until someone shuts it off.
A $157 diagnostic answers both questions and ends with two prices, repair and replace, so you decide with the math in front of you.
What actually drives the price
Three things move the number: fuel type, size, and code requirements. Gas units cost more than electric because of venting and the gas connection. Bigger tanks cost more than smaller ones. And South Carolina code requires items some old installations never had: expansion tanks, proper relief valve discharge, seismic strapping where applicable. A quote that looks cheap often becomes expensive when those "extras" appear on the final invoice. Flat-rate pricing bakes them in.
When tankless makes more sense
If your tank is due anyway and your household keeps outrunning the hot water, a tankless unit deserves a look before you buy another tank. Tankless runs roughly 20 years to a tank's 8 to 12, so one tankless outlives two tanks. The math, the honest downsides, and the install prices are in our tankless vs. tank comparison.
Bluffton timing: why neighborhoods fail together
Bluffton's subdivisions were built in waves, which means whole streets got their water heaters the same month. When your neighbors start replacing theirs, your tank is on the same clock. A replacement you schedule and one forced by a Saturday rupture cost the same flat rate. Only one of them comes with a wet garage. Same-day replacement is the norm in Bluffton and usually possible across Hilton Head and the rest of the Lowcountry.
